A year has passed

I'm a little bit weary now of anything that looks peculiar on my skin. I just visited my dermatologist last week because I found something weird on my back and also because it's been a year since my ordeal. He's the best. It's so important that you like your doctor. I'd be apprehensive to go back if I didn't. Anyway, the spot on my back turned out to be....yes... a pimple!! Hooray!!! Dr. Jenison checked another spot on my face and then gave me the once over in all the places that might be exposed to the sun. Everything looks A-O.K.! The doctor recommends seeing him once a year and sooner if I find something suspicious.

Oh wow! I've never even seen what skin cancer looks like. Also, your surgeon did a wonderful job. You can't even tell you had anything done. :)

This is inspiring and definitely eye-opening to what skin cancer can do. My aunt had it once but I never got to see it and didn't even see it after her surgery. Thank you for sharing your story.

You look great! Wow! What a story! Thank you for being so brave and sharing your journey! My dad has had several cancer spots removed and I lost a dear friend to skin cancer. I've had my own scare that turned out to not be a big deal. Here's to good health!

Thank you for your story! I am also fair skinned and covered with freckles and moles from past sun worshiping. I have them checked, but I am always worried about something popping up. I'm glad you're ok!

Thanks for sharing your experience. I too am a blonde and fair fan of the sun. I faithfully visit my dermatologist annually. At age 60, so far I have had several AK's frozen but that's all. This year, he gave me Carac cream to put on my upper chest as it had a lot of rough patches. This cream brings all the sun damaged cells and potential AK's to the surface and kills the cells. Rather uncomfortable, but clears the skin and makes it healthy. I will continue to visit my skin doctor annually. Very good blog.

Ok that is unbelievable! I used to work for an oncologist. First off I can't believe what your beautiful face went thru....and it still looks beautiful!! Good plastic surgeon. I had some moles removed too when I was pregnant as they grew larger in size...they where benign. I do use a lot of block now, but did not when I was younger, and that is what I am afraid of. Thanks for sharing this story, I will remember it!

I am amazed at the extent of your first surgery for a basal cell. I have had around 18 basal cells removed, over the last 20 plus years, starting at age 35 pregnant with my third child. A few have been on my face (cheek, over my eye lid, nose, hairline, etc.) but the plastic surgeon did not cut as extensively as for yours. That must have been scary but it healed so well.
Be sure to keep up with the doctor appts. because I find, they never stop popping up. I've had them on my back and legs as well and go every 6 months to be checked. It's those childhood sunburns that come back to haunt you!

Thank you for sharing your story. I had my first basal cell carcinoma removed a year ago (from my collarbone) and am scheduled to have another removed from my nose in a couple of weeks. Like you were, I am quite self-conscious about my nose to begin with, so I am afraid of the skin graft. But I am taking courage from your positive experience. Thanks again for sharing.

Malignant melanoma is the rarest and most deadly form of skin cancer. It affects the melanocytes (the cells that produce melanin, the skin's pigment) and seems to be more prevalent among city-dwellers than among those who work outside. This seeming paradox is because scientific data indicates that episodic sun exposure resulting in burn is linked to melanoma, but constant exposure is not. I also was just diagnosed with Basal Cell on my chest, while I was having that removed the Derm did a biopsy on a mole under my bra line. It has been a month of fear! I am terrified to hear the results of that one. What a dumb kid I was, always laying out and going to tanning beds regularly. I'm so mad at myself. I have two beautiful children that need me and I am terrified that eventually this could kill me. I just turned 40 this year. I'm just so worried, I can't calm down, how did you all deal with that fear? It just makes me crazy that these tanning beds are even still around! All teenage girls care about is being pretty! You can tell them a thousand times that they are dangerous but they won't listen, just like I didn't.

I had Mohs surgery two months ago and I had a plastic surgeon do nasal reconstruction the next day on my nose. I regret having the surgery, and now have to live with a terrible scar on my nose. I don't think doctors tell you about creams or radiation. I think they just want to cut. I also feel they don't tell you or show you how bad you will look. Thanks for sharing your story, I am so sorry you had to go through that. You're beautiful!

I just had the very same surgery on the very same area of my nose, the nasal area. The Dr. did a skin graft and sewed the "bolster" dressing to the skin graft area to help put pressure on the graft area. The donor site came right in front of my ear. We talked about the flap surgery and it would have been on my right cheek right next to the nose area. I chose to go with the skin graft. Hopefully mine will look as good as yours once it is completely healed.

Did you skin graft on your nose look gray the first few days after removing the bolster?

Just had two basal cells removed by Mohs-- one could be stitched, the other (on my nose as well) required a skin graft. It's only beern a few days so mine still looks scary. Watching and reading about your journey had made me feel much calmer and hopeful. Thank you so much for taking time to post your story-- so glad it has such a happy ending!

just found out today that i have to have my basal cell carcinoma removed. i first noticed it about three yrs ago, went to the gp after a yr, she sent me to hopsital thinking it was nothing. they said they were sure it was nothing but could shave it off for me. i did not like the thought of that. (bad terminology!) so left it. but felt very self concious of it as it is on the tip of my nose. so went back and they said they would remove (sorry shave!) had this done four weeks ago and went back today to hear it was BCC. so i have to have a graft from my ear as the position is not good for the flap. not looking forward to it at all. they said that the nose would look differant.

thanks for sharing- I can't believe how long of a scar they have to do, don't understand that. Just had a Basal cell removed on my outside bicep. it was so small, I had no idea how big of a cut the plastic surgeon would do. I was kidding with the tech how I would tell ppl about the shark I had to fight off leaving me with this scar but it actually looks like one took a bite on me. Not sure wether to be really scared of the sun or not. Don't like the idea of being out of it, I enjoy the outdoors, I'm definitely going to research this extensively. It just seems like overkill to me.

Thanks for posting your story and photos. I had surgery 4 days ago and wondered what the wound site should look like; to compare mine. Mine looks worse than yours but basically the same procedure above the nose tip. At 75 and male, I'm not too concerned about how it looks when healed, just that it looks as it should now.
Thanks again.

I had a BCC surgically removed 6 weeks ago on my nose. I see another spot in the same location that will not heal. My first surgery cost me $1,700 and that was just my out of pocket after my health insurance covered the rest ($9,920 ) Is this too expensive to be paying for this surgery?
